We know you guys get super excited and really enjoy whenever we include an artist’s creations in our blog and that’s why we had to share Patrick Seymour’s line-art illustrations with you today. We have divided our blog in such a way that we will give a brief intro. of Patrick then we will talk (a lot) on line-art illustrations and in the end we would like you all to go through his amazing line-art illustrations. So, let’s get started!

Patrick is based in Montreal, Canada and works as an Art Director at lg2. He is also an illustrator and has worked on multiple portfolios for the organizations he has been associated with. Now let’s have a look at the basics of line art and line-art illustrations. Line-art is basically the art of drawing images with straight & curved lines against a solid background. This is done to create 2 and 3 dimensional creations. Artists can use different colors to create their line-art but normal practice is to draw monochromatic art.

There are multiple types of lines for example:

  • Thin
  • Thick
  • Vertical
  • Horizontal
  • Diagonal
  • Zigzag
  • Spiral
  • Curved
  • Curly

It’s important to know that different types of lines are incorporated in a drawing to depict a certain mood or movement. Similarly, different artists use different types of lines to create their stuff. Some illustrators and artists do not show a lot of lines in their creations. You won’t even notice the existence of such lines but they are present there and mainly work as the focal points.

Okay so, if you are someone who wants to polish their line-art illustration skills then you have come to right place because we will share some easy to follow amazing tips & tricks to help you become an even better illustrator.

Tip no. 1:

Make it a habit to always start working on a grid first. And if you have a lot of time then you must draw sketches on papers with the help of a mechanical or regular pencil. Start your drawing process by creating basic shapes. Those who are beginners and are worried about creating another sketch on the screen, know that you can literally transfer your paper sketch to Photoshop by exporting the sketch as a PDF and then importing it to Illustrator. By doing this, you will be able to give a “handmade feel” to your illustrations.

Tip no. 2:

It’s good to do some research on your thoughts & concepts. You’ll be able to get inspirations and ideas to create something unique and attractive. You can also educate yourself regarding things which are already there in the world. In addition to that, you can even see if your idea is related to a topic which is a non-controversial one and that it won’t attract any negative publicity after getting shared with public.

Tip no. 3:

It is also really important to have a balance between ‘neat’ and ‘dirty’. And to bring the element of depth, what you can do is that you can keep the edges rough while keeping the shapes neat.

Also, if there are any expressions (happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, fear etc.) in your drawings then make them visible enough that even if your drawings are monochromatic, the expression doesn’t get lost because of those lines.

Tip no. 4:

You might not be able to achieve on your screen what you had in your mind initially and that’s completely fine because with the passage of time and multiple attempts at bringing out the best in your line-art illustrations, you will produce a more refined version of your creative thought process.

What we mean to say is that, do not consider your first attempt as the final result – no matter what you are working on. You can even pause the process of creating a drawing and resume it after some hours or may be days (depending on the urgency of the task). Trust us on this, you will end up creating something extra ordinary while working on it with a fresh mind!

Tip no. 5

  • We will start this tip by mentioning an insight which was shared by a USA and Russian artist Roman Muradov who said that a strong illustration is never a statement but a question – as in it inspires the viewer to start a conversation or may be to question the illustration itself, the lines and everything else for that matter.

The point we tried to make here is not too difficult to understand but allow us to explain it in simpler words. Whenever you are creating a design or an illustration, you must be mentally and physically prepared to keep revisiting it until the final submission is done. No, we don’t want you to hold on to your projects but what we do want is that you must keep the memories fresh. Revisit your designs etc. to bring an innovation to the idea or to detail it even further that your heart and mind both are at peace and that you are satisfied with all the efforts that you have put into creating your drawings.

That being said, we’d love it if you guys could go through the superb art line illustrations of Patrick Seymour who has not only created skulls and animals but also liked to illustrate characters like the Joker and Batman.
