1. Cover, Back & Spine Design
We are sure that you guys must have heard someone say to you that you should never judge a book by its cover. And we feel that it is one of the most crucial parts of designing a book cover, back & spine that the designer needs to ensure that they create such a thing that it cannot give it all away as far as the contents of a book are concerned. But how does one think of such a compelling book cover that a potential reader wants to pick the book up from a bookshelf and wants to know what it is about? Well, there are different ways of going about it. For example; you need to have one-on-one conversations with the writer(s) in order to know the book inside out because only then you will be able to create something that is intriguing enough to be sold. It is also very important that you design something that complements the genre, alright? Otherwise, the book covers can confuse or mislead the readers and we are sure that as a book designer, you would not want such a thing to happen.
2. Typography (font selection)
Now, let’s talk about the more technical parts of a book. For example; the typography. As you know the book is going to be read and it is also possible that the readers would want to read it again and again so, you need to ensure that you only incorporate those fonts that not only complement the theme of the book but are also highly readable. You have our permission, you can think of a decent sans serif now. Designing a book is not something that can happen overnight. Or maybe it can but we are sure that you guys know that good things take time. And as they should, we want you guys to spend as much time as you can designing the whole thing so that you are 100 percent sure that what you are making will be liked by the masses.

3. Design & Template Layout
Designing the layout is another important aspect of a book and as a book designer, you should know how you can aesthetically please the audience. It can be challenging at times, but hey, no one said it’s impossible. 😀 So, get your hands on the approved images, illustrations, etc., and then arrange them in such a way that the whole thing makes sense on each page of the book. We would also like to add here that you guys should have something created or developed if it’s not readily available. You can also have such conversations with the writers to decide the way forward because well, they are the ones who will take the final call, right!?
4. Formatting
Books are written and published on various mediums from print to digital and it’s up to the writers as well as the publications to decide which routes to take. So, if you guys are going to publish the book on multiple platforms then make sure that prints are compatible by carefully working on the formatting. As a book designer, it is your responsibility to make sure that the contents of the book have been proofread multiple times and that the overall formatting is consistent throughout so that nobody has to go through the process of printing the books all over again. 😣
5. Print Ready Files
After formatting and carefully designing the layouts designer needs to make the book print-ready by setting up the trim marks. Discussing the special colors such as Pantone and defining the book binding.
