Hi there, hello there! How are you all doing? We hope that everything is fine at your end and that you guys are also having a great time reading our blogs. In today’s blog, we aim to discuss how to handle negative feedback in graphic design and if you are new in the field, then we are sure that you will be able to learn a couple of things that can help you stay on the right track even after receiving negative feedback on your designs. So, make sure that you guys read the blog till the very end, okay? 🙂
Okay so, first things first; no matter where you are working, there is a very high chance that you get feedback from your line managers, CEOs or even your teammates. There are people who cannot handle negative feedback in a positive way and there could be multiple reasons for this. For example; the person who is sharing the feedback isn’t coming from the right place or lacks the expertise to give consolidated feedback. We, for a fact know that there are people who share feedback for the sake of sharing feedback. They do not fully understand a concept but they have to act all bossy so that they can keep their subordinates on their toes. 😟

Another reason could be that the people who are sharing their feedback do not happen to use the right kind of words and that can offend the person on the other side of the table. However, some people get offended even if the feedback is given to them by keeping in mind the SOPs. Why, you ask? Well, in general, we are not very good at receiving negative feedback. Whenever someone tells us about our mistake, we become defensive and take that personally whereas, it is important to understand that the feedback is not about us, but the designs that we shared with them.
Not being able to handle the negative feedback positively can result in difficult situations. 😰 For example; the person who just got the negative feedback would be more focused on how to react to the comments that were shared with them rather than revising the designs as per the feedback. As a professional, you should know that you can receive all sorts of feedback depending on how you are working in your field. Feedback is not only crucial for people’s professional growth but it can also help them stay ahead in the game for their clients as well. 👏 So, instead of focusing on your reaction, you should be more focused on how you can incorporate the requested changes and get back to your manager or client in time.
In this part of the blog, we will share a couple of tips and tricks to help you handle negative feedback without letting it get under your skin. Make sure that you continue reading the blog! 🫡
No matter who is sharing negative feedback with you, it is important for you to keep a positive attitude at all times. By doing so, you will give your team lead the impression that you are a team player and take their feedback seriously (unless they are highly negative in their tone and wording, then, of course, you can discuss it with them and let them know that you are open to feedback – given that it is shared with you appropriately and professionally).
Having said that, let’s assume that your team lead is a good person and the concerns they are sharing with you are legit. So, instead of taking it personally and getting offended, you can have a detailed conversation with them during which you can explain why a certain design was created. If the feedback remains the same after the conversation, then you must incorporate the requested changes to get the show going. The same would be the case with your client(s) as well.
Always keep in mind that negative feedback can also serve as a learning experience for you in the long run. Your positive attitude won’t just help you gain your team’s trust but will be a guiding light in your career as well.
