Hi there, hello there! How are you guys doing today? We hope that all is well at your end and that you guys are also having a great time reading our blogs. In this blog today, we will talk about the limitations color blind people might face if they choose to be designers. However, we would also like you guys to know that there is always a silver lining and all you need to do is look for it, okay? 😀 Before we dive into the topic, we would first like to thank you all for the love and support that you send our way and for also making sure that your friends, family and favorite colleagues are reading our blogs. And we would love to see more of that happening in the future as well.
First things first; let’s get to know what color blindness means and how it can impact an individual’s life. Color blindness is also known as color vision deficiency, and it is a common condition. What happens is that a color blind person is unable to perceive some colors as they are, mainly because the cones in their eyes are not there or do not work properly. Having this condition does not mean that one cannot see any colors; they can. However, they can’t differentiate between certain colors like other people who do not have that condition. We must also add here that in some severe cases, people suffering from color blindness cannot see any colors at all.
Usually, color blindness is inherited in people. However, in some cases, people can also develop this condition due to certain medical conditions. There are several types of color blindness (which we are going to list down below), and you must consult a professional to understand the severity of the condition as well as how to deal with it so that you can do your thing without having to be dependent on other people.
Some of the types of color blindness are listed below:
1. Anomalous Trichromacy:
This refers to the type of color blindness in which the person has all three cones (Red-sensing Cones, Green-sensing Cones, Blue-sensing Cones) in their eyes. However, one of them doesn’t work properly – resulting in a person not being able to see colors as they are.
2. Dichromacy:
As the name suggests, two cones are present in the person’s eyes but one of them is missing. A person with this type of color blindness cannot tell the difference between colors that are fully saturated.
3. Monochromacy:
This type of color blindness refers to the fact that a person either has one cone type in their eyes or that the cones do not work properly. The person who has this type of color blindness has very limited or no ability to see color. Moreover, they only see the world in different shades of gray.
Having said that, we are sure that most of you guys must be thinking that the field of graphic design is not for people with color blindness, right? Allow us to share with you guys that more than 300 million people are color blind around the globe. So, it means that every 1 in 12 men is color blind and every 1 in 20 women is color blind. That’s a lot, we know! And this brings us to say that when such a huge number of the world population is suffering from color blindness, there are no restrictions on them to join graphic design. Here is why:
When creating designs and selecting colors, we are sure that you would feel that you cannot do a certain project, mainly because you won’t be able to differentiate between colors. However, that’s not the case, because you have already mastered your respective degree and you are someone with the right kind of knowledge. If you do face a challenge while picking colors, you can always ask your peers to help you with that. Know that when it comes to graphic design, colors are not that important; being creative and skillful is. If you have the confidence, creativity and basic skillset, you have already won as a designer.
That’s all for today, everyone!
