If you work in an ad agency, then you would also know that the design team is not the one that gets to interact with the clients or even third-party vendors for that matter. All those tasks are completed through the account managers or the people in the business development teams. And rightly so, because to be honest, designers do not have that kind of time on their hands anyway. But when the communication is being carried out by other stakeholders, it is important for the design team to actively participate in setting out the deadlines so that they do not have to face any challenges while delivering the tasks. Being a designer in an ad agency does not mean that you cannot be open and upfront about the workload that you and your team members have and how you would like to take things forward.

We must also add here that having worked for ad agencies in the past, we know how the account managers do not really interact with the design team when it comes to setting the deadlines. And that is wrong. Because the design team is the one that is solely responsible for translating the concepts and ideation into designs and other visuals of sorts. That could mainly be because of the fact that the account managers are more concerned about their position in front of the higher ups or the clients so they do not mind throwing the design team under the bus several times during a project. Now, that is something that needs to change and for good because most ad agencies end up solving the personal vendettas more than they should be working on their clients’ projects.

Being a responsible designer and a team player, you must always discuss your current workload and set realistic deadlines for your deliverables. This practice won’t only help you work for reasonable hours but you will also be able to pay full attention to the work that you are doing without having to worry about the deadlines. On the other hand, if you do have to handle tight deadlines, here are some tricks that you can follow in the future:

–  Prioritize your projects and tasks. Always remember that no one can go wrong when they have prioritized their tasks. You can also break down the project into manageable tasks and then proceed with what needs to be done, when and how.

– Be efficient about everything that you are doing. If there are any hurdles in the way, address them so that you and your team can move towards the finish line without impacting the project’s growth.

–  A lot of people still do not believe in collaborating within or with other teams. Know that’s not a viable strategy and can hurt you in the long run. If you need guidance or an extra hand, just collaborate with other teams.

– Be open and clear in your communication with your teams and your clients so that everyone is in the loop. Always keep in mind that transparency is the key to success.
